New Delhi: Air pollution has been linked to a number of diseases, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes (such as preterm birth), and even death. It is dangerous, especially, to people who are living with lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Older adults, people with weakened immune system, children and developing babies are also at an increased risk of experiencing symptoms or other harmful effects from breathing in polluted air.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says exposure to outdoor air pollution claims some 3 million lives each year. WHO air quality model also confirms that 92% of the world’s population lives in places where air quality levels exceed WHO limits.

Currently, the national capital Delhi is reeling under the pressure of severe pollution and the dip in temperature is creating havoc. Adopting some simple techniques from Sanatan Kriya for 10 minutes daily can help you keep your lungs strong and system toxin free, says spiritual head of Dhyan Ashram Yogi Ashwini.

Increase in pollution levels, among other things, takes a toll on lungs opening gates for a plethora of problems.

Nadi Shodhnam Pranayam is one of the effective techniques - alternate nostril breathing exercise.

Nadis are subtle energy channels in the human body that can get blocked due to the various reasons.

The Nadi Shodhan pranayama is breathing technique that helps clear the blocked channels, thus calming the mind. This technique is also known as Anulom Vilom pranayama.

A regular practice for at least 10 minutes daily will help clear the blockages.

The other technique is Jala Neti - a process of cleansing the nasal passages with salt water - allows free breathing so that air can enter the lungs unimpeded by mucus and dirt which easily builds up during the day.

Another very effective technique is putting ghee in nostrils.

Pour about five drops of warm the pure ghee - made from cow's milk - up to a bearable temperature in the nasal passage to strengthen the mucous membranes against infections.

Pour it in a way that it does not flow down towards the throat but towards the head. Do it before you step out of the house.

However, it is advised to learn these techniques from experts at any of the Dhyan Foundation centers where Sanatan Kriya is taught free.
